Update 12.03.2025: I have realized that I was on an ego trip – and that I won’t find anything anywhere in the world that is more valuable than time with my children. I will therefore continue to live a materially reduced life, but I will move back to Switzerland and spend as much time as possible with my daughters.

Update 27.01.2025: The Tages-Anzeiger has picked up on my post and published a comprehensive article with a video interview and stop-motion animation of my equipment. Read article (German only)

Comfort and freedom are opposites. You cannot maximize both.

I have realized that my main motivation is freedom – not money or status.

And the fewer things you have, the more free – and often happier – you are. There is wisdom in the fairy tale of Hans in Luck.

I have therefore decided to drastically reduce my physical possessions. I have asked myself whether I really need each and every item. And if I do, I have checked whether there is a lighter alternative.

As a result, I now own only 76 things weighing a total of 7.5 kilograms. I did not count consumables such as toothpaste, deodorant, etc., which weigh less than 1 kg in total.

From January 2025, I will in addition no longer have my own apartment and will live as a “digital nomad” only in hotels, Airbnbs, with family and friends.

“Friends are better than money. Almost anything money can do friends can do better. In so many ways, a friend with a boat is better than owning a boat.”

Kevin Kelly

This is all I still own:
